![]() The Mohicans Style: Rap/Hip-Hop (with a funky sound) Current Base: Dallas, Texas Facebook - http://facebook.com/TheMohicans Music - http://soundcloud.com/The-Mohicans Mixtape - http://themohicans.bandcamp.com Twitter - http://twitter.com/MohicanMusic **In 2011 Dallas Observer awarded The Mohicans with Best Rap/Hip-Hop act in Dallas. With some super fly lyrical deliveries to the lightly funky soundwaves, mixed in with some dirty south flavor of course, this duo gained my fandomness since 2011 when I purchased their first musical release, Uncas. My fav songs on that compilation included :: Tracks 2, 3, and 5. The others definitely also had me moving and jamming so lets not get anything twisted. Currently they still perform at local shows in their neck of the woods and are currently preparing for their upcoming EP release quite soon. Check out my interview with them below as I picked their brain a bit. Ms Rexti: Yaaay!!!! I have The Mohicans on the phone. David & Devan: Hahahaha…. Ms Rxt: Yeah, I'm such a fan of your music. So, when did you officially discuss working together? Devan: We met at an event off campus…. David: Yea, like after the event he hit me up on Facebook talking about he makes beat; he liked what I did and I liked what he did and it went from there. Ms Rxt: How about the discovery for each of your talents for the music? Devan: As far as making beats, I kind of began doing that junior to senior year in high-school. So I guess I realized that I wanted to music professionally in 2007 David: I didn’t even know I had a talent for music; I just always liked music in general but not like making music. It wasn’t until I met Devan, then I realized I could do this for a living because it came so naturally. So I’d say around about 2009-10 I made that decision. Ms Rxt: Where do you guys hope your music would be—do you have a target goal for say the next 5 years? David: I’m hoping everywhere. Devan: Of course I want it to get as big as possible. Everything happens at the right time and I care to put out and make quality music. I am concerned with the time frame, I keep that in mind but keep the focus more so on putting out meaningful music at least for what I’d wanna to hear. Ms Rxt: I believe you guys do that, it makes sense why you sound so dope. It sounds like you’re not just putting rubbish out there, it’s thought provoking and well mixed.. It’s some good music! For example, my current obsession is ‘Iniuriam’. How? I mean, who’s idea was that and how were you each inspired to deliver the lyrics about it? David: Shout out to Devan! He came up with the concept and everything, that was his whole idea. I was amazed when I first heard it.
Devan: I had this beat and was making stuff and it came out really organic, like it was what I had in my mind and how I wanted it sound in my mind. Ms Rxt: I have to say, that whole set that you recently put out on You-Tube in 2013, sounds just sick! Back to ‘Inuriam’, I think that song is like a road-trip cruise type song; at least to me, it’s like the lean back and listen type of song with the tones and timbre of it all. Even the simplicity of the video's concept complimented the song quite well. David & Devan: hahahaha.. Ms Rxt: Your lyrics made the song even more profound! The title of the song, how you you arrive at the decision to use it for the song? Devan: I ran the name by Dave, ‘cause originally the song sounded to me like a “Vision Quest” –like the different Indian cultures’ tradition of vision quest, say for the men to arrive at manhood--but that sounded kind of lame name so then we decided to change that… what was it, did you have Latin names you looked up? David: Yea like , I looked up the Latin word for “Wrong or Right”. Ms Rxt: Nice! I think people should embrace your music and take time to jam to it. You know how we used to do that with songs from back in the day, we’d listen to each track, intently listening to artists to get to know them and their sounds, your music does that. I can see the quality in your piece of work. I mean that genuinely. David & Devan: Yea yea… Ms Rxt: Now about Fashion, how would you describe your individual take on style? David: As far as style, I don’t care to look too flashy or swaggy but wear something that looks cool and is comfortable at the same time. Devan: Based on where I am at right now (as an up and coming artist), I feel like it’s not necessarily my focus right now. If I had more time to be conscious of fashion, I’d probably do it, but I’m focused on music right now. Ms Rxt: That’s cool. What about other musical artist’s sense of style from the past or present—do you ever look at other artists to consider their fashion style? David: As far as current artists, naw, not really. In the past, I’d say people like Michael Jackson, he had the craziest style wearing like metallic things. He was like inspired by like the 70s, so like those styles were really cool. Devan: There’s this documentary I was following about where those crazy styles came from; a group called “fly and the family stone” started that whole thing with the funk theme, and the guy who did their clothes ended up with Prince and so many others. So I see that and it’s funny to see artists (even like Andre 3000) go to that for inspiration. I feel like it’s all about having your originality, just being you with whatever you want to do. Like for Andre 3000 and when he dressed all wild, he was probably feeling like everybody’s 'like this' so show them that you don’t have to be in the box with what everyone else is trying to do. Ms Rxt: I feel like you guys are doing the same right now in a sense; l peep that you’re not trying to impress people with your sense of style, not much more than with your musical sounds so you are staying true to yourselves with that. So let’s get personal in a different kind of way. How do you relax in your off time when not doing music. Devan: …..uhh ummm, hahahah. Let me see, I went to an art museum the other day. I like to go out and do different things, say try new restaurants and things like that. David: The main thing I like to do is play basketball and draw. I used to really be into making all kind of portraits and now I just draw cartoons. Ms Rxt: That’s cool, I dig that. If you could each vacation for 3 months straight, where would you go? David: That’s a lot of time ..haha Devan: That’s a lot of vacation time! Devan: I’d probably just go everywhere that I could possibly go in those three months. Maybe a trip to out of space, that’d be pretty tight! David: I’d probably spend a month in out of space with Devan, after it gets too crazy I’d spend a month in Alaska or something. Then I’d probably go somewhere normal like Brazil or the Caribbean and just chill. Ms Rxt: In life right now, what are you most grateful for? Devan: I’m just thankful for everything actually; even like the trials and the way you might want things to be, I feel like everything happens the way it suppose to happen and the way its gonna go, so I’m just thankful for everything. David: I’d say, I’m thankful for my mom and family.. stuff like that—my friend just lost his mom. And like Devan said, I’m also thankful for the process and the trials because you can learn and grow from that, learning things you probably never know before. Ms Rxt: I appreciate you allowing me this opportunity to pick your brains and to get to know the people behind the music I love. Kudos and keep doing it so well! Devan: Thank you for enjoying the music, we appreciate that. David: Definitely |
